I feel sad walking in here every time I visit the mall. This is because there are a bunch of people getting animals there and they're in very bad conditions. The puppies are all from puppy mills and are prone to health problems. The rodents. OH my the rodents. The hamsters have very bad wheels. There are too many kept in one cage when some species are solitary! The mice, rats, and gerbils seem to have the same problem. I don't know much about reptiles or aquatic pets so I won't bring them in my complaint but i'm sure they're not in the best conditions either. I would feel much happier if the staff was A LOT more educated and the animals were treated a lot better.
I actually adopted my king charles cavalier from here recently. The staff were very friendly. I have no issue with my puppy. There is nothing wrong with him. You get all his paperwork. Yes, the puppies are alot but you are paying for a purebred. A vet actually comes every week to check up on the puppies and kittens. My only complaint would be is that they put too many rodents, bunnies, and ferrets in a cage.
We bought our first English Bulldog from here on impulse. Richard, the manager, promoted the puppy as being from a "Veterinarian" breeder. Upon further investigation "Dr." Beukelman runs a puppy mill with 93 adult dogs on his property & MANY USDA violations. The English Bulldog we purchased was 5 months old at the time we bought him. He had extreme bahavior problems that we were unable to correct. Being caged for the first 5 months of life probably led to him being extremely territorial. That led me to having to give the dog away to my cousin because we have a little girl & couldn't take the risk. Richard's only response was to send me training dvds, which we had already tried everything under the sun. This store promotes puppy mills & poor breeding. If you want a pure bred dog find a reputable breeder or adopt. The best dog I've ever had is a Pittbull mix from the ANNA shelter.
UPDATE: I STOPPED IN TODAY AND IM DISGUSTED. There were two Ball Pyhtons housed together, and the one was so starved you could see his bones poking out. It's terrible!!
At Heartland Pets there are some gorgeous amazing puppies that you are able to hold around the store and/or take into a half enclosed room which is awesome however one of the small dogs was $2,000 dollars. That is outrageous in my opinion. I thought the animal shelters charging $200 and $150 for dogs was too much, imagine by how appalled at hearing $2,000 dollars. Um, this is Erie, PA not Beverly Hills. I feel sorry for the dogs who have to stay in cages because the majority of families can't afford to pay this amount. I think they'd have homes for the dogs really quickly if they would charge $200 or less. Most all of the dogs were asleep and didn't seem to respond to tapping on the window so I don't know if it's sound proof or they were given a sedative but it was quite concerning because usually dogs especially puppies are hyper and upbeat and love to see people. Now in person they were very sweet and came to life. I just hope there welfare is the top priority of the store and not making an absurd amount of money. There were a gazillion pet toys and supplies which is terrific however the prices were too high at about $12 and up for small toys. It's a nice store but I don't feel like the animals well being is the top priority and making sure they all find a home. At $2,000 a per, making sure they all get adopted obviously isn't the top priority. I Just hope they are being treated right. Everyone seemed nice and accommodating so I can only hope. Again $2,000 dollars? Say what? I don't know which planet and/or economy this place is trying to appeal to.
Getting a puppy at Heartland Pets is a HORRIBLE idea. All of the puppies are from horrible, deplorable puppy mills. That means that the people from the puppy mills will get more puppies for the profit, not only that Heartland Pets put more puppies in danger, but they also sell the puppies for over $2000.00!!! When really, they should be selling them for UNDER $100.00, because the puppies are more prone to different illnesses and sometimes, don't even live as long as they normally should. In my opinion, I feel that they should only be selling pet supplies and NO live animals. If I could, I would give them -100 out of 5 stars.
